Your Employment Rights in the UK: What Every Worker Should Know

Whether you’re a British citizen, a temporary worker, or an international candidate, understanding your rights as an employee in the UK is essential. At TM&H Recruitment, we believe that informed workers are empowered workers — and we’re here to help you navigate your rights clearly and confidently.

📄 1. Your Employment Contract: What It Must Include

By UK law, you are entitled to a written statement of employment particulars within two months of starting your job.

This contract should clearly state:

  • Your job title and description
  • Your salary and pay schedule
  • Working hours and days
  • Holiday entitlement
  • Sick leave and notice period

Important: Always read and understand your contract before signing. If you need help, ask your recruiter or an employment advisor.

💰 2. Minimum Wage: Are You Paid Fairly?

As of 2025, the UK National Minimum Wage rates are:

  • £11.44/hour – for workers aged 21 and over
  • £8.60/hour – for ages 18 to 20
  • £6.40/hour – for under 18s
  • £6.40/hour – for apprentices under 19 (or in first year)

Employers are legally required to pay at least this rate — if they don’t, they are breaking the law.

🕒 3. Working Hours, Breaks, and Overtime

The standard legal working week in the UK is 48 hours maximum — unless you’ve signed an agreement to work more.

You are entitled to:

  • At least one 20-minute break for every 6 hours worked
  • 11 hours’ rest between working days
  • One full day off per week (or two days off every 14 days)

Overtime is usually optional — and should be paid or compensated with time off if agreed in your contract.

🏖️ 4. Holidays, Sick Leave, and Parental Rights

You have the right to:

  • 28 days of paid holiday per year (including public holidays, depending on your contract)
  • Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) if you’re ill for more than 4 consecutive days
  • Maternity and paternity leave — if you meet eligibility criteria

All of these are part of your basic employee rights — whether you’re full-time or part-time.

✋ 5. Protection from Discrimination and Harassment

The UK’s Equality Act 2010 protects you from discrimination based on:

  • Age
  • Gender or sexual orientation
  • Race or nationality
  • Disability or mental health condition
  • Religion or belief
  • Pregnancy or parental status

Harassment, unfair dismissal, or unequal pay can all be legally challenged. Your safety and dignity at work are protected by law.

📢 6. What to Do If Your Rights Are Violated

If you believe your employer is breaking the law or violating your rights, you can:

Remember: You are protected against retaliation when reporting illegal or unsafe practices at work.

TM&H Recruitment is here to support you — not only in finding a job but in ensuring your rights are respected every step of the way.
